Demand justice for Tippy and Fay
On Wednesday the 2nd of September 2020, the Coalition was contacted by the latest of many heartbroken human victims of 1080 poison, the owner of Tippy and Fay. Both died howling in agony.
“We have just lost two beloved working dogs, one a border collie kelpie cross sheep dog and the other a Maremma to 1080 baits. We have since learnt that 10kms away a permit was given to a property owner to put out baits. Whether birds brought it to our property that far away or someone closer has illegally put out baits we don’t know… but it’s a cruel way for any animal to die. Our two beautiful dogs died screaming with pain. We have a 9-week-old Maremma pup we now fear for”
On the behalf of this heartbroken family, the Coalition is fighting for justice.
The Queensland Government states that “if non-target animals are suspected of dying as a result of a 1080 baiting program, Queensland Health should be contacted so that it can be properly investigated and, where possible, the appropriate tests undertaken”.
There is precedence for this course of action to be taken. In January 2018, a multi-agency response was taken following suspected illegal dog baitings in a suburb in the Gulf Country region of Queensland. Representatives from the Queensland Department of Agriculture and Fisheries, the local Council, the Queensland Police Service and Queensland Health developed a response to tackle the issue.
The officer in charge of the 2018 investigation stated:
“Anyone caught baiting animals with the intention to harm will not be treated lightly and can possibly face a term of imprisonment if found guilty in court”
We urgently need your help to spread awareness about this horrifically cruel poison and seek justice for Tippy and Fay, the latest victims to be taken too soon by a poison banned almost everywhere else in the world. Under relevant State legislation, a deliberate act of cruelty carries a maximum of three years’ imprisonment or a $252,300 fine. We intend to secure the most appropriate retribution for Tippy, Fay and their family.
Outcome
The Coalition launched a petition targeting Queensland Health, the Queensland Department of Agriculture and Fisheries, and Bundaberg Regional Council, asking them to urgently investigate Tippy and Fay’s death. Over 3,000 caring individuals signed the petition and…
