Victim Impact Statement

A call to arms for those with broken hearts

If you or someone you know has lost a pet or witnessed a wild animal suffer 1080 poisoning, please share how this grief has affected you and your direct family.

By submitting a victim impact statement, we can launch a class action case before the government who allows this deadly substance to be used. We are one of the last remaining countries that do so. By sharing your experience, we can end 1080’s reign of terror together.

  • The house and my heart aren't the same without you.

    Victim impact statement

  • She didn’t die in her sleep, nestled in her bed as old age overcame her like she deserved. She died in the most horrific way imaginable. She died from 1080 poisoning.

    Victim impact statement

  • While I held her down I talked to her, telling her we loved her and trying to keep her calm. She was lying in the dirt, paddling her feet, screaming the whole time while just looking at me with pleading eyes.

    Victim impact statement

  • I've seen many people die in pain but nothing could prepare me for what we were witnessing. Hysterical, we could do nothing to help him. He passed away some half an hour after the screaming started...

    Victim impact statement

  • Hold your pets closely tonight and treat every day like it could be their last. Because ours was yesterday.

    Victim impact statement

  • The vet ran out to meet me but we were too late. I just sat in the gutter and cried. I couldn’t believe this had happened.

    Victim impact statement

  • When she finally reached the camp, she had her last fit and she bit off her tongue. She died in my partner's arms.

    Victim impact statement

  • Someone should pay for the agony my puppy dog went through. A class action should be taken against this organisation because they know how this poison works - it should not be used at all.

    Victim impact statement

  • No one should have to go through the horror of losing their beloved dog to 1080 bait poisoning.

    Victim impact statement

  • I can't get our babies faces out of my mind; contorted, terrified and in obvious pain. I woke up this morning thinking I heard the dogs playing and barking in the yard. My daughter woke up at the same time and said she thought she heard them too.

    Victim impact statement

  • No animal should go through this, least of all my little boy.

    Victim impact statement

  • We rang the emergency vets and they diagnosed his symptoms as 1080 poisoning. They told us we could bring him in, but he probably wouldn't make it. So we should start to say our goodbyes...

    Victim impact statement

  • I am still traumatised at the memory of this day and would not wish it on any animal – domestic or wild. I was completely ignorant about this poison until this day and am now determined to do what I can to support the cause to get it banned.

    Victim impact statement

  • We are heartbroken and very angry. What a terrible way for our baby to die. We hope that her loss will help to ban this terrible stuff

    Victim impact statement

  • What our poor boy went through was absolutely horrific and heartbreaking. Our 3 year old daughter witnessed the whole awful ordeal.

    Description goes here
  • This is not how she was supposed to die. She was supposed to grow an old dog and an old mate.

    Victim impact statement

  • It was the worst day of our lives. She was so precious to us both.

    Description goes here
  • She was screaming. She had blood coming out of all ends. She was frothing at the mouth and running around going crazy. If I had a gun, I would have shot her. It was the most horrible thing I have witnessed in my life.

    Victim impact statement

  • It was already too late - we immediately put a bullet in him to make the pain stop and end his misery. But so began ours.

    Victim impact statement

  • The memory of holding our gentle little dog in his final conscious moments as he writhed and screamed in agony will haunt us forever.

    Victim impact statement

  • All I could do was hold her close and tell her how much we loved her as she died.

    Victim impact statement

  • I had to lay on him to hold him down. My partner had his head in his arm whilst he tried to drive to the vets. We only made it 200m. Within 10 minutes he had died in our arms.

    Victim impact statement

  • It was the single worst experience of my life so far, losing such a good and loving friend in such a traumatic way.

    Victim impact statement

  • We live on a farm but hubby said she had acted weird, like she was being chased, as if the other dogs were either avoiding her or trying to kill her. Then, she started barking, screaming... he said he never heard anything like it.

    Victim impact statement

  • We tried to pick him up to put him in the car to rush him to the vet, but he couldn't be lifted... it caused him to scream this blood-curdling sound that I know I will never forget.

    Victim impact statement

  • I hoped he knew he was loved.

    Victim impact statement

  • When Dad came home, he knew straight away that something was really wrong. I had only ever seen Dad cry twice: that night and when his mother died.

    Victim impact statement

  • I was a registered nurse at the time and I have seen many terrible deaths… but nothing has compared to Toby’s.

    Victim impact statement

  • This tragic, sad, cruel and painful event has not and never will leave my mind.

    Victim impact statement

  • Suddenly, she started convulsing. This agony went on and on. I was so afraid I ran inside. Then, I heard my husband cry out himself in anguish, and I emerged to see him crying, holding our gentle girl, saying she was gone.

    Victim impact statement

  • The trauma of having to watch my best friend scream, thrash and howl in agony while I could only watch, powerless to help him, will haunt me forever. I have an endless ache that goes to my very core.

    Victim impact statement

  • I cannot emphasise enough how horrendous a death by this poison is. His screams and thrashing will haunt me every time I close my eyes.

What is a victim impact statement?

A victim impact statement details how an experience has impacted you. It can help courts understand the impact the experience has had on you before making a decision. It is also an important opportunity for you to have your voice heard and to share your experience in a way that is empowering for you.

If you cannot prepare a victim impact statement for any reason, an immediate family member, a person who is important in your life or any other person you choose can prepare one on your behalf.

If you are unsure how to complete the form, please contact us so that we can help you.

Why do we need your victim impact statement?

We regularly receive first-hand reports from people and families who have lost loved ones or witnessed wild animals die by 1080 poison. Because many people are experiencing significant emotional trauma at the time, we often report these events to the relevant state authorities on their behalf. This is one of the services we offer.

But we need more people that 1080 poison has directly impacted to step forward.

Too many native animals, pets, and service or working dogs are innocent victims to 1080 poison. This has to stop. And with the power of people who know first hand what that pain is like - to stand by helpless as you watch your beloved pet slowly die - we can get there together.

If 1080 has left you with a broken heart, we are asking you to relive that moment once more.

You do not need to fill out every item in the form. If we require additional information, we may contact you to clarify any points.
