Blue Mountains National Park
AERIAL BAITING: 26 August - 8 September 2024
The Blue Mountains National Park is located approximately 80 kms west of Sydney CBD. Though originally gazetted in September 1959 to cover 63,000 hectares, today the Blue Mountains National Park covers 267,954 hectares. In 2000, it became part of the UNESCO World Heritage-listed Greater Blue Mountains Area. It is home to kangaroos, wallabies, echidnas, and various bird species. It is the most visited National Park in NSW, with 5.2 million visitors in 2016.
Though the Blue Mountains City Council successfully banned the use of 1080 poison through a motion introduced in February 2021, Council cannot regulate the activities of government departments or agencies. This includes the National Parks and Wildlife Service. As such, though the Blue Mountains City Council do not use 1080 poison, the National Parks and Wildlife Service continue to distribute it in nearby parks and reserves.
These baiting activities are managed by the Blackheath office of the NSW National Parks and Wildlife Service.
